A little bit about me

Ian joined S3TAX as a Director in 2023 as the firm’s ethos of delivering bespoke tax support to the housing and third sector was firmly in line with Ian’s belief and hope of what a VAT career should look like for him. With Ian’s career consisting of advising the sector, but primarily in firms where the sector was not the full focus, Ian recognised the value of a tax consultancy firm that did just that and was excited to join S3TAX and continue to deliver the personalised, sector-focused approach to clients.

Expertise

Upon graduating in 2009, Ian went straight into the world of VAT, taking a role supporting NHS Boards and Trusts to ensure that they maximised their VAT recovery and got their VAT compliance correct.

After nearly six years Ian moved into a mid-tier firm to broaden his VAT experience and become a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser. Ian’s focus, and the majority of his day-to-day work, was with public and third sector bodies and this continued in his role at a further mid-tier firm, where Ian progressed to lead the public and third sector VAT offering for the North, Scotland and Northern Ireland regions.

Ian joined S3TAX in 2023 with nearly 15 years of experience and his expertise has seen him present at events and conferences for Scottish Government and the National Housing Federation. His experience of dealing with HMRC, sector bodies and a range of clients means he fully understands the VAT complexities for the housing, third and public sectors and is able to provide support and solutions that all parties can engage with and understand.

Other interests

In his spare time, Ian enjoys trips out and about with his family, watching football (when he gets a chance) and has recently got the dust off the golf clubs to try and live up to the expectation that if you grow up near St Andrews that you should be good at golf.
