Our next ‘Managing VAT in the Housing Sector’ training event is a single event being delivered online across two days on’ the 10th and 11th of October 2023 (between 10am and 3pm with time for coffee break and lunch on both days).
This single event is designed to give confidence to those who need to manage VAT in a Housing Association and provide the knowledge and practical insights to enable delegates to spot issues, risks and cost saving opportunities within their organisation.
We will take you on a journey starting with the basics working through to complex scenarios that we regularly encounter in relation to development activity within the sector.
Day 1 (Tue 10 October 2023) – General VAT training

- Income treatment and associated coding issues
- VAT recovery, expenditure reliefs and associated coding issues
- Reverse charge on international purchases and Domestic Reverse Charge on construction
- Land and property overview, including the option to tax and its disapplication

- VAT shelter arrangement
- Non-business activities and the impact on VAT accounting
- The ever changing use of buildings and the Capital Goods Scheme
- Making Tax Digital
Day 2 (Wed 11 October 2023) – Developments VAT training and emerging issues
- Implications of varied tenures (outright sales; shared ownership; affordable rent; market rent etc.)
- Maximising/Simplifying VAT recovery on development activity and obtaining reliefs
- Acquisition of land for mixed purposes – the options
- Design and Build relationships and wholly owned subsidiaries
- Non charitable activities – outright sales and market rents
- Modular build
- Joint ventures
- Threats to the zero rating of new build residential property
- How and when ‘cost sharing vehicles’ may be beneficial
Your presenter Colin Scates is experienced in providing informative, interesting sector focused training sessions. He has a vast experience of the interaction of VAT with governance, legal and other taxes, which may create broader discussions during the event.
The event will also cover connected Corporation Tax issues from a specialist which is particularly important from a development activity perspective.
